Lock, Stop, Chain, Check gets a make over

The Lock, Stop, Chain, Check logo has been updated to include a reminder for people to keep doors locked at all time even when they are at home.  The message "Home or away, keep all doors locked" was added to the old message of "Stop, Chain, Check".

New PR Acquisitive Crime (Distraction Burglary) campaign launched

A new Distraction Burglary PR campaign was launched by the Home Office on 7th March 2005  to raise awareness of the crime and how to protect people from becoming victims of crime in their own homes. This is part of the Acquisitive Crime campaign which has been on going since October 2004.

The latest PR blitz was aimed at reinforcing the existing "Lock, Stop, Chain, Check" campaign, which encouraged good door-step behaviour thus protecting the elderly against bogus callers. The campaign was specifically targeted at the over 65s who live alone, and their carers. An analysis of police records indicates that 77% of victims of distraction burglary are predominantly female, 74% live alone and the average age of the victim  is 78 years. The campaign is fronted by broadcaster, Angela Rippon (see main picture).

The main focus was to add value and a national focus to a wide range of events that have already been planned (either by local police or CDRPs) and to encourage the regional media to deliver the message using local case studies and, where possible linking in to local crime reduction activity. With celebrity endorsements from Terry Wogan, Esther Rantzen, Saeed Jaffrey and Gloria Hunniford, the campaign would attract widespread attention. Organisations include Age Concern, Foundations and Gala Bingo have agreed to distribute Home Office "How to Beat the Bogus Caller" leaflets and stickers.

"How to Beat the Bogus Caller" leaflets and stickers can be ordered from Prolog (Telephone: 0870 241 4680).

New PR campaign on Distraction Burglary launched

A new Distraction Burglary PR campaign was launched by the Home Office in April 2004 to raise awareness of the crime and how to protect people from becoming victims of crime in their own homes.

The latest PR blitz was aimed at reinforcing the existing "Lock, Stop, Chain, Check" campaign, which encouraged good door-step behaviour. The campaign was specifically targeted at women (who make up 77% of those who suffer distraction burglary), as well as the over 65s who live alone, and their carers.

The main focus was to encourage the regional media to deliver the message using local case studies and, where possible linking in to local crime reduction activity. With features stories already in local and national newspapers, and celebrity endorsements from Peter Purves (see above right), Valerie Singleton , Saeed Jaffery (see above left), Jimmy Young, Terry Wogan and others, the campaign would attract widespread attention.
