The Taking a Stand Awards are all about recognising those who have tackled anti-social behaviour in their area. Up to 30 awards will be made across England and Wales. The awards will be of £1000 each, with a £5000 prize for an overall winner - the prize money will then be spent on supporting the schemes to further tackle anti-social behaviour.
Communities across the country are being urged to help celebrate their ‘local heroes’ who have taken a stand against vandals, thugs and noisy neighbours. An incident of anti-social behaviour is reported every 2 seconds across England and Wales and it costs £13.5 million a day to deal with anti-social behaviour. One in three adults say anti-social behaviour is a problem in their local area.
The Taking A Stand awards have been developed by the Home Office in partnership with the Co-op Group and Crime Concern. The scheme recognises individuals and local groups who have shown commitment and bravery in tackling anti-social behaviour problems in their communities such as vandalism, nuisance neighbours, graffiti, harassment, intimidation and rubbish dumping.
